The Academic Course is taught over 7 events between July- August 2018. Under the theme of “Being Human”, students will have the opportunity to explore the nature and history of humanity through a variety of subjects and disciplines. The course covers subjects as varied as archaeology, anthropology, philosophy, linguistics, languages and religious studies. Taught by Oxford Academics, the course will offer a diverse exploration of humanity’s past, present, and future.
The course will have a blended learning format with a mixture of face to face and online seminars available to participants. The course will begain with a kick-off event on 21st July at Oxford University followed by a mixture of face to face and online seminars. Completion of the course will be marked by a final day event at the University of Oxford in the last week of August.
Taking part in the Academic Course is completely free including travel costs. The course is targeted at students with a strong academic record (A or B grade at GCSE) and a hunger for new and interesting knowledge. Independent learning, confidence when dealing with challenging resources and critical thinking are some of the skills that participants achieve by completing the programme.
Participants are recruited from the schools in the local region with a total of 30 places available. The course is selective with applicants being assessed for their commitment and potential prior to taking part. Priority will be given to applicants who live in geographical areas where higher education participation is both low and much lower than expected given GCSE level attainment.
