Sunderland Hub launch event- 22nd November 2017-National Glass Centre
OxNet is a national access and outreach initiative. Its first North East Hub is based in Sunderland, supported jointly by Oxford and other universities as part of their commitment to widening participation amongst groups under-represented in higher education. Outreach programmes run by OxNet will be open to all eligible schools and pupils within Sunderland and Washington.
The first of these programmes, to be launched in November, is an intensive academic course, ‘The Ordered Universe’, which branches off from an international research project spanning the Humanities and STEM, involving the Universities of Oxford, Durham, and several others. This year-long extra-curricular course for Year 12 pupils, modelled on existing OxNet courses which have successfully run in other parts of the country, will give participants a chance to engage with academics conducting world-leading research, culminating in a week-long residential Summer School at the University of Oxford. A pilot ‘Ordered Universe’ Summer School which ran this August proved hugely successful, and we hope to build on this in the North East.
In addition, further opportunities across a range of subject areas and key stages will be developed as the project grows. We are particularly keen, for instance, to promote early-years interventions, alongside partner universities and third-sector organisations in the region, to bring universities into classrooms at all levels, and to provide new opportunities for young people in Sunderland in both academic and vocational pathways.
The Launch will feature a keynote lecture and information about OxNet programmes and courses, whilst also providing an opportunity to network with OxNet staff, and with representatives from Durham University and participating Oxford colleges. The Launch will take place on Wednesday 22 November at 5.30pm at the National Glass Centre in Sunderland.
