North West Science Network

NWSN Summer School Day 1

North West Science Network

The North West Science Network aims to engage students from the northwest with research-level science which complements the curriculum and extends beyond it; the network is designed to inform, motivate, excite and inspire.  South Cheshire College and Xaverian College Manchester are partnered with Pembroke College and Corpus Christi College (Oxford) to form the North West Science Network, with a growing number of northwest schools and other universities nationwide involved. Our core aims are:

  • Raising students’ academic aspirations regarding the range of opportunities available to them in higher education and to promote the study of STEMM subjects at university
  • Fostering enthusiasm for science and a love of learning through sustained academic engagement designed to broaden students’ academic horizons
  • Enhancing the subject knowledge of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine (STEMM) students and teachers
  • Providing students with experiences that broaden their knowledge of the current scientific landscape, raising their ability and confidence to explore and communicate their interest in science, and enhance their ability to transition to STEMM subjects at leading research universities
  • Raising the profile of STEMM subjects that are not usually taught as specific subjects at A-level (such as Materials Science, Earth Sciences etc.) so that students can think beyond the traditional disciplines such as Physics or Chemistry
  • Engaging with both schools and communities to promote the study of science and the benefits of STEMM subjects and research intensive universities

We do this by providing a programme of free events for STEMM students and teachers, including lectures and seminars, visits to research facilities, a Mathematics School and a Summer School held in Oxford.

As of 2016/17, the NWSN programme will include twilight lectures at both South Cheshire College and Xaverian College. Our partner schools and colleges have the opportunity to host a twilight too. The application dates for the maths and summer schools have also been brought forward to avoid exam season.
